STC board talks early graduations, sex education curriculum

All five members of the STC School Board were present alongside school district employees and community members for Monday’s meeting.

In a relatively brief meeting the board went over topics ranging from early graduation requests to health textbooks to vacuum cleaners.

The board teabled a consent agenda item of approving five early graduation requests. Members of the board in agreement with Superintendent John Cain agreed this discussion and vote would be better down the line after reviewing school policies leading to early graduation for students.

In a continuation from the previous meeting, Sam Peska, director of curriculum and student services, came back to the board after reviewing concerns in sex education topics brought about by board member Beth Wiese. Ultimately, the board settled on a variation of the proposed curriculum which includes two of the four sex education chapters in the student textbook while the other two chapters will be accessible for the health teacher to filter and present in a way the district deems appropriate for students.

Both Wiese and Tyynismaa voted in favor while Werner and Dolezal voted no. Board President Mandy Lekin broke the tie and voted aye for the version of the proposed curriculum to be passed.

The board discussed a potential purchase of 10 new cordless vacuum cleaners brought forth by the STC maintenance department. A quote from HD Supply for 10 cordless vacuums in the amount of $9,755.50 was provided. The board tabled the discussion in hopes of more information at the next meeting before moving forth.

The board will next meet on Monday, June 19.
