The times they are a changin’

Supervisors overhaul public comment period

After this reporter showed up 15 minutes late to the Tuesday, May 30 Tama County Supervisors meeting, I sat at my little table as everyone in the room talked amongst themselves. Topics of discussion varied widely but mostly centered around events that happened over the long weekend. The latter half of the public comments section went unutilized during this time. Recently, the Supervisors’ public comment time has undergone a retooling which has led to long silences and these stretches of idle chatter. Supervisor Bill Faircloth, who overhauled the public comment section a few weeks ago, has put forth the idea to minimize the comment time from 30 minutes to a simple 15. This, the supervisors hope, will reduce the ever more frequent lulls. The new time frame will be on next week’s agenda; and if passed, will go into effect on the 12th.

The supervisors decided to give Thursday and Friday, July 27 & 28, off to all county employees due to RAGBRAI. For those who have to work, for example, Sheriff’s Deputies will be given two days of comp time to use in six months.

The Tama County Engineer reported that the 4/10 hour days will start next week and that the work on Toledo Deer Creek bridge is moving along swiftly. The engineer also requested that the County looks into the purchase of a new truck for himself that would cost around thirty-nine thousand.

The supervisors also approved an addition to the Thirsty Pigs LLC liquor license.

A liquor license for Fox Ridge Winery was also approved. Claims totaling $448,853.30 were approved.
