Tama Council talks crosswalks, ambulances

One of the main concerns at Monday night’s Tama City Council meeting was safety. The Tama-Toledo Visioning Group discussed with council members the possibility of putting in a crosswalk for the South Tama County High School.

The proposed crosswalk would cross the four lane highway east to west at either 16th or 17th Street. A small boy was at the meeting to share his thoughts about the harrowing cross over the highway.

The Iowa DOT did a study on the area and the placement of the possible crosswalk. The Council approved the Visioning Group to take the next step in the process for the crosswalk, grant writing.

June 27-29 were decided as dates for city cleanup. Miguel Guzman met with the council to talk about the possibility of buying a downtown property. The discussion was tabled until a later meeting so that all the council members could become more knowledgeable on the subject.

Hannah Snodgrass was approved to become an EMS volunteer.

Ambulance 241 switched out its anti-freeze leak for an oil leak, and the heater in the back went out, so it was approved to buy a new ambulance for $191,000. The ambulances will also be getting a new body wrap in June for around $7,000. .

Automated external defibrillators will be purchased with a grant for both the library and the auditorium of the Tama Civic Center. The auditorium will also be remodeled with shades, paint, and a new projector.

Brian Price was hired for summer help. The discussion of removing dead and diseased trees on berms was pushed to a later date.

The catch basin at Fourth and Park Street will be redone, and the water line at the Tama Park will be repaired. The council designated $800 toward the acquisition of plants for downtown Tama.

The Snyder contract was approved for the Highway 63 culvert. Changes were made to the mowing contract, and Potter’s mowing bid was approved.

The Fire Department is patching up one of their trucks, and Public Works has patched holes in the road.

Tama City Clerk is working on the next budget and is having everyone do harassment training.

The Water Department has been flushing hydrants.

The Nuisance Officer has cleaned up 909 Harding Street and is working on others. The Tama Police Department received 324 calls between March 17 and April 17.
