The main bit of business done by the Toledo City Council on March 13’s meeting was the honoring of baseball great and Toledo native Leonard “King” Cole. A star pitcher for the Chicago Cubs during their pennant-winning season in 1910, this departed citizen has become a local interest for sports fans all around the country. The Toledo Heights ballpark off Highway 30 will now be forever known as Leonard “King” Cole Field. A sign is to be purchased and erected at the park.

There was much discussion over the Woodlawn Housing development. Deliberation as to exactly what covenants are to be enforced for the future homes is still in progress. The Woodlawn development will feature 41 residential lots that will be home to multiple single-family and multi-family dwellings. Work is still being done at the sight in preparation for the selling of the lots.

There was approval for a payment request for demolition services at the former Iowa Juvenile Home property in the amount of $186,252.25.

Spring clean-up dates for the city of Toledo were finalized at Monday’s meeting. On Wednesday, April 26, the city public works department will conduct curbside pick up for junk materials. On Thursday, April 27 the city will conduct a curbside pick up for brush.

All items set out for pick up must be within four feet of the curb or they will not be taken. The four feet rule was set forth to help keep the volume of junk to a reasonable limit. City Administrator Kendall Jordan said the concern was that a small number of property owners were preparing to unload a house load of junk for the city to dispose of, which is not the intended utilization of the spring cleanup program.

It was approved to contract mowing for three years. The city will advertise in the coming weeks seeking bids for the mowing of three city-owned parcels by private contractors. Jordan said he hoped the city could absorb the parcels as part of the public works department’s regular mowing schedule but that it wouldn’t be feasible this year as the department will be mowing some additional ground on the former Iowa Juvenile Home site while development work is underway. A resolution was approved for a public hearing on April 10th concerning the proposed amendment to the revitalization plan for the Toledo Urban Revitalization Area.

A request to carry over unused vacation hours was approved.

The clerk’s request to attend the IMFOA spring conference was approved.
