March 31 marked the end of an era in the Tama-Toledo community. Dr. Jerry Wille of Tama announced his retirement from the MercyCare Tama clinic in early March and worked his last day with patients and staff last Thursday. Wille has served the Tama-Toledo community as a resident physician for many decades and has been a part of the MercyCare clinic since their entry into Tama in 2003.
Staff and patients took a moment Thursday afternoon to pause and gather to celebrate Wille’s career achievement as he finished seeing his last patient. A retirement party was held earlier last month.
It remains unclear what the company’s intentions or plans are to replace Wille at the Tama clinic. Tama News Herald reporting from 2016 around the clinic’s lease agreement with the city of Tama indicated Mercy Medical’s plan at that time was to make a concerted effort to recruit a physician to Tama once Wille retires. The lease agreement signed in 2016 was a 10-year agreement set to expire in 2026.
