Students from the Meskwaki Settlement School have been active competing in the high school individual and state speech competitions this winter.

The Warriors were represented at the State Large Group Contest on Feb. 5 at Cedar Rapids Kennedy High School by a group performing in the TV News category. Those students included Irene Keahna, Curtis Youngbear, Sophie Snow, Clayton Brown, Wakinyela Bear, Geanna Bear, Reimundo Balderas and Zandra Youngbear.

The team presented a historical television news broadcast that focused on the events leading up to the September 11th attacks. The video included national news, a special interview with “Reese Witherspoon,” weather, a commercial, and breaking news of the two towers being hit.

Following the state contest, many of the same students got to work on their individual speech events in preparation for the district and state contests. The group received an overall 1 rating for their performance.

Eight students including Irene Keahna (prose), Geanna Bear (prose), Reimundo Balderas (prose), Wakinyela Bear (radio news), Zandra Youngbear (poetry), Clayton Brown (radio news and literary program), Curtis Youngbear (original oratory) and Sophie Snow (musical theater) traveled to Marshalltown High School on Feb. 26 for the District Individual Speech Contest. The state contest for Individual Speech is set for March 12 in Grinnell.
