Gov. Kim Reynolds paid a visit to Toledo on Feb. 18 to tour the vacant Iowa Juvenile Home facility that is at the center of a school bond referendum up for vote at a special school election on March 1. Reynolds heard details of the coordinated efforts between the state, the South Tama County public school district and the city of Toledo to devise a plan that would provide state funding for demolition and remediation work to be conducted at the facility prior to the school taking ownership. Should the school’s bond measure pass a March 1 special election, the city of Toledo would act as a pass-through for state funding that would otherwise not be available to school districts. During the visit Reynolds expressed optimism toward the potential for mixed use of the property for a new school and for housing development.
