One dead after shooting incident in Chelsea

A 28-year-old Chelsea man is dead following a shooting incident in Chelsea Thursday evening.

According to a press release issued by the Iowa Department of Public Safety, Tama County Sheriff’s Office received calls of shots being fired near the 1000 block of Station Street in Chelsea at approximately 7:30 p.m. Thursday night.

When officers arrived on the scene, they observed Dewey Dale Wilfong III walking around with a handgun.

A Tama County Deputy then fired one round that hit Wilfong in the upper torso.

Wilfong was transported to UnityPoint Health-St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids where he was pronounced dead.

The name of the deputy has not been released, though in a statement from the Iowa Department of Public Safety it was made clear the deputy has been put on administrative leave while an investigation into the incident is conducted.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety’s Division of Criminal Investigation is conducting the investigation. An autopsy will be will be conducted at The Office of the State Medical Examiner in Ankeny.
