The fair queen program will take place at approximately 7 p.m. in the show ring on the Tama County Fair Grounds in Gladbrook.

Rachel Silhanek

This year four contestants including Ellie Behrens, Frances Jackson, Rachel Silhanek and Hope Werner applied and will be judged July 11 at Spanky’s Restaurant in Gladbrook. The judging event is being hosted by the Wolfcreek Whirlwinds 4-H Club.

The contestants will be judged in three equal categories. The first category is leadership, citzenship and contributions to the community. The second category is personality and awareness, and the third category is poise and beauty.

The Tama County Fair Queen and Princess will be chosen by impartial judges, the results sealed and announced at the crowning on Tuesday, July 13.

Fair Queen Candidate: Rachel Silhanek

Rachel Silhanek, 17, daughter of Roy and Sarah Silhane of Tama and a senior at South Tama.

Frances Jackson

In high school, Rachel is involved in STC Technicians dance team, color guard, track and tennis. She is also a member of South Tama FFA serving as Treasurer and Secretary.

In her community, Rachel is a nine year member in the Young Guns 4-H club and serves as parish and helps with their annual fall dinner and festival. She has been dancing for the last 15 years through Jeralyn’s Dance, and now Spotlight Studios. She also likes to volunteer her time to play ‘Taps’ with the Tama American Legion.

During the summer, Rachel works through Pioneer to de-tassel, and works at the State Fair as Livestock Control. In her spare time, she enjoys running around the farm, working with her goats and riding her horse.

Rachel’s future plans are to attend Iowa Stat University this fall and study in Agronomy.

Hope Werner

Ellie Behrens

Hope Werner, 18, is the daughter of Eric and Michele Werner of rural Toledo. Hope just graduated from South Tama County High School as Valedictorian of her class.

Hope has been involved in Student Council, Phi Theta Kappa Academic Honor Society, National Honor Society, Basketball and Football Cheer and Tennis.

In her community Hope has participated in 4-H Clover Kids since Kindergarten. She joined the Toledo Techs 4-H club following that. Since her membership she has held offices of Secretary and President. Hope also participated in Intermediate Tama County Council and she is a current member of Tama County Council. Hope is a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and Youth Group.

In her spare time Hope enjoys playing the piano and singing. Hope also enjoys working with children. She helps teach tennis to grades 1-8 through the STC Rec program. Hope also works for Murph’s Creamery and Grill as a cook and cashier.

Hope plans to attend Iowa State University and study Accounting and Business in the fall.

Ellie Behrens

Ellie Behrens, 18, is the daughter of Chris and Andrea Bherens. She lives in Clutier and is a 2021 graduate of Union High School.

While in high school, Ellie has participated in a variety of activities. To name a few: volleyball, large group speech, student council and musicals. She served as co-captain of her tennis team her senior year. She is also an active member in her church and enjoys being involved there.

In her community, Ellie is the current president of the Clutier Cowboys and Cowgirls 4-H Club. She has previously been the secretary, treasurer and vice president. She has been a 4-H member for nine years. Ellie has also taken piano lessons and plays at her church when needed.

Additionally, Ellie has detasseled and roughed during the summer and is working at Bobby’s, the local grocery store in Dysart this summer.

Her future plans are to attend the University of Iowa with an undecided major. She is interested in the medical field or education.

Frances Jackson, 17, is the daughter of Matt and Ann Jackson of rural Garwin. She has just finished her senior year of high school at GMG. While in high school, Frances has been active in cheerleading, band, National Honor Society, FFA, Spanish Club, speech and student council. During her senior year of high school she was the president of the GMG FFA chapter and GMG Spanish Club.

Frances is also very active in her community. She is currently the Tama County Beef Queen and the President of the Garwin Roughriders 4-H Club in addition to being a member of the Tama County Council. She is also a member of Chapel Church Youth Fellowship Group and travelled to Belize on her church’s mission team.

Frances is employed by Earl May in Marshalltown and loves to help on her family farm.

Frances plans to continue her education at Iowa State this fall. She has been accepted into the first year honors program and plans to double major in accounting and ag business.
