What’s next on South Tama bond issue?

Consideration of what action might be taken next by the South Tama School Board concerning a second middle school addition bond issue vote is expected to continue at the April 20 board meeting.

Board members said during a Monday night, April 6 meeting, they want a presentation again from Travis Squiers, managing director of public finance investment banking for Piper-Sandler, Des Moines. They said the “levy issue” on the ballot which failed on March 3 needs further exploration.

They also directed Superintendent Jared Smith representatives of Invision Architects to also present ta the meeting. The firm had recommended the addition to the high school as the most cost effective solution to replace the middle school.

The bond issue received 53% voter approval in March, short of the required60% for passage. The accompanying levee vote was to allow the school district to annually levy property taxes to exceed $2.70 per $1,000 property value but to not exceed $4.05 per $1,000. It met with less success Yes- 760 – No- 806 – 48.5% approval with 60% also required for passage.
