Do you want to be an owl? Come join the O.W.L.S. (Older, Wiser, Livelier, Souls) group at Otter Creek Lake & Park on March 11 at 11 a.m. This month features guest speaker William R. Clark with a presentation titled “The Ancient Cats of America: Ancient History and Modern Conservation.”
The talk starts with a brief overview of the evolution of cats including paleological history of sabertooth cats and cheetahs that once roamed North America. The talk transitions to the modern cat species including endangered species like ocelots, and common species like bobcats.
“Of course, I talk about pumas that occasionally show up in Iowa. Finally, I talk about conservation challenges including habitat loss, climate change, conflicts, and hunting,” Clark says.
O.W.L.S. is a fun way to get out of the house, learn about nature, and enjoy the company of friends. This lunch & Learn series is scheduled the 2nd Wednesday of each month, and is designed for seniors but all adults are welcome.
Meet at the nature center at Otter Creek Park, 2283 Park Road, Toledo. Presentations start at 11 a.m. and a light lunch will follow the program (around noon).
The program is free and open to the public. RSVP to Brendan Kelly to help us plan for seats: 641-484-2231 or bkelly@tamacounty.org.
