Polls open Tuesday for $20.8 million South Tama bonds decision

South Tama School District patrons will go to the polls next Tuesday, March 3, to cast ballots to decide if a new middle school addition will be built to the high school in Tama.

Approval is sought for issuance of $20.8 million in general obligation bonds to pay for the construction.

The addition would replace the middle school in Toledo.

In addition voters will decide:

a proposition which allows the school district to annually levy property taxes exceeding $2.70 per $1,000 valuation but to not exceed $4.05 per $1,000 valuation. If approved this money is used to pay for bonded indebtedness principal and interest payments.

a proposition asking for approval of a revenue purpose statements which spells out a list of uses of funds received from the Iowa Secure an Advanced Vision for Education (SAVE) program. This is a one-cent sales tax devoted to all schools and allocated based upon per pupil numbers. Among items allowed for use upon approval are spending on information technology, new buildings, additions, lease-purchase,remodeling, demolition work, public recreation, playgrounds, payment of principal and interest on general obligation bonds.

Polls are open from 7 a.m.- 8 p.m. in these locations:

Precinct No. 1- Chelsea Fire Station, 707 Station St. (Richland, Salt Creek, City of Chelsea, York, City of Vining, Madison and Jefferson (Poweshiek County); Precinct No. 2- Montour Community Building, 104 E. Elm St. (Highland, Indian Village, City of Montour); No. 3 Tama Civic Center, 305 Siegel St. (Columbia, Tama Township, City of Tama, Otter Creek Sheridan (Poweshiek County); No. 4 Reinig-Toledo Civic Center, 1007 S. Prospect Dr. (East and west Crystal, Carroll, Howard, City of Toledo, Toledo Township and No. 5 Meskwaki Tribal Center, 309 Meskwaki Rd. (Indian Settlement.)
