Instructors sought for Kids in College

The Iowa Valley Continuing Education (IVCE) Kids in College summer program is seeking instructors for Summer 2020. Kids in College is open to youth in grades 4-8 and will be offered in two sessions this summer: June 15-19 (Monday through Friday) and Aug. 3-5 (Monday through Wednesday).

“Last summer, more than 125 students participated in Kids in College and had a great time,” says Terri Hungerford, Iowa Valley Intermediary Coordinator. “We’re looking for people who enjoy kids of this age and who have a talent or special skill that they’d like to share. In addition to just being a fun summer learning opportunity, our goals are to provide instruction in topics that aren’t generally available as part of the regular school curriculum, and to give kids the opportunity to study a particular subject in-depth.”

Last year’s Kids in College participants have enjoyed or suggested these topics: Build a Robot/Coding, International Cooking, Harry Potter, Horse/Equine, Welding, Challenge Course, Let’s Build, Paracord, What It Takes to be a Nurse, Anime Art, What It Takes to be a Veterinarian, and Art.

“For the June 15-19 Kids in College, we will offer two sessions: 8:30 – 10 am and 10:15 11:45 am; instructors are paid $300 per session they teach, with a materials budget of $40 per session,” says Hungerford. “For the Aug. 3-5 Kids in College, the sessions will run from 8:30 to noon with a snack break at 10. Instructors will be paid $360 for the three-day event, also with a materials budget of $40.”

Those interested in teaching should go to the IowaValley.com website and in the top menu bar click on ABOUT CE. From there, potential instructors will find a memo with additional information (and session topics) and an Instructor Interest Form, which should be submitted to Hungerford by Friday, Feb. 21.

“It’s important that prospective instructors contact us soon because our plan is to open online registration for Kids in College and get fliers to the elementary and middle schools by mid-April,” emphasizes Hungerford.

Hungerford can be reached by phone at 641-844-5627 or by email at Terri.Hungerford@iavalley.edu.
