Toolkit focuses on health science careers

The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), in partnership with the Iowa Department of Education (IDOE), Iowa Hospital Association (IHA), Iowa Health Care Association (IHCA), and various health care service providers, educators and community partners, has released the Iowa Health Science Work-based Learning Toolkit.

The toolkit is a collection of resources to encourage middle and high school students, and adult job seekers to enter into health science careers.

Match Skills

And Interests

The purpose of the guide is to help students and job seekers match their skills and interests with high demand health careers in Iowa, including those that do not require more than two years of school, but still offer a competitive wage. The toolkit project is in line with Governor Reynolds’ Future Ready Iowa initiative.

In Iowa, the Health Care and Social Assistance sector was the largest employer in 2018, comprising 14.5 percent of all covered public and private employment with 224,018 jobs. Iowa’s aging population, more patients wanting to recover at home, and advances in technology will continue to drive the demand for health science professionals in Iowa. To meet this growing need, a variety of strategies must be employed to attract, develop and retain a skilled workforce.
