Update: There were previous Native American valedictorians at STC High School
Enriqueta Wanatee-Diego was recognized by South Tama High School as the first Native American to be honored as valedictorian during commencement exercises on Sunday, May 19, and this was reported in the May 31 issue of The News-Herald.
Since the story appeared it has been learned two Native American graduates in 1999 shared valedictorian honors at STC along with a third class member who was also co-valedictorian.
They were Justin and Josh Davenport, twin sons of Kim and the late Lloyd Davenport. In addition, Joseph Hughes was recognized as a valedictorian along with the Davenports .
All three attained a 4.0 grade average and were also honored that year at a Toledo-Tama Kiwanis banquet.
A school resource person said South Tama has not identified any other Native American South Tama graduates who were named valedictorians from records available which date back to 1980.
However, readers are encouraged to notify the school and The News-Herald if they are aware of others.
