On Tuesday,?May 7, Tama City Mayor Mike Carnahan and Poppy Chairman Brenda Youngbear gathered to declare the month of May as the American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Month and Friday, May 17 and Saturday, May 18 as Poppy Days in the City of Tama.

The red crape paper Poppy is the symbol of the little red poppies that grew in the battlefields and graveyards in France during World War I. These poppies remind us of the sacrifice our service people have given during World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the War in Vietnam and the wars of Panama, Granada, Desert Storm and in Afghanistan.

All proceeds from the Poppy Distribution are used for the benefit of veterans and their families in the local community.
