65th annual Tama County Government Day

High school students from South Tama, Gladbrook-Reinbeck, Green Mountain-Garwin and North Tama were on hand at the county seat in Toledo for the 65th annual Tama County Government Day.

A total of 116 students took part this year.

Students get a close-up look at the offices and functions of local, county government through visits to offices and programs presented by county officials.

Tama County remains as the lone American Legion Government Day in the U.S., an event which was once a nation-wide undertaking.

The 65th annual event was co-chaired by Dick and Jolene Denbow, Gladbrook and sponsored by Tama County?American Legion Posts and Auxiliary Units including Chelsea, Clutier, Dysart, Elberon, Garwin, Gladbrook, Meskwaki Nation, Montour, Tama, Toledo and Traer.

There were 32 volunteer Legionaries and Auxiliary members assisting this year.

Students vote on current issues as a part of the activities. Here are the questions and results:

1. Should flavored E-cigarettes be taken off the market due to increased teen use and addiction? YES- 62 NO- 49

2. Do companies / tech colleges supply enough opportunities to train new graduates for blue collar job openings? YES- 58 NO?43

3. Should school staff members be trained to recognize depression problems among students to prevent school suicides? YES?99 NO?11
