GFCW/Iowa scholarships, Music Campships available

The GFWC/Iowa Scholarship Committee administers a number of scholarships to Iowa students to Iowa colleges and universities. The number of scholarships awarded is determined by the amount of money contributed by clubs, proceeds from special fund-raising projects, and interest from investments on memorial scholarships. GFWC/Iowa Scholarships are based on volunteerism, achievement, and financial need.

Scholarships available are: The Lucille Miller Memorial Music Scholarship to a graduating high school senior majoring in Music at an accredited four-year Iowa College or University; GFWC/Iowa Scholarship to a graduating senior enrolled in undergraduate studies attending an accredited four-year Iowa College or University; Community College Scholarship to a graduating senior enrolled in a two-year accredited Iowa Community College/Technical School or other comparable accreditation/certification program; and the Phyllis Hughes Memorial Scholarship which is only open to women to study Law at the University of Iowa, Drake University, or with preference given for attendance at Marquette University in Wisconsin.

Other than the Law Scholarship which is only for women, all other scholarships are available for either men or women high school graduates.

Applications are available at the STC High School Guidance office, along with instructions on what is needed to complete the applications. All applications MUST be postmarked by February 1, 2019.

Music Campships

The Iowa General Federation of Women’s Clubs, GFWC/Iowa, sponsors several music campships for interested 8th 12th grade music students (must have graduated from the 7th grade before attending the camp). These awards can be applied toward tuition and room and board at a summer music camp within Iowa. Campships are awarded in the amount of the cost of the camp up to $400. Award recipients are responsible for the balance of their costs.

Applications can be obtained at the South Tama County High School Guidance Counselor’s office, from music teachers at the Middle School or High School, or by contacting Karen Havran, Toledo Woman’s Club Scholarship Chairman at 641-484-4007. Applications need to be picked up and completed as soon as possible due to the need for a letter of recommendation. Completed applications need to be postmarked by February 1st. Campships are available for males or females.

Campships are awarded through a generous gift to GFWC/Iowa by the E. Lucille Miller estate, as well as yearly contributions from local GFWC/Iowa clubs. The General Federation of Women’s Clubs is an International organization that is dedicated to strengthening communities and enhancing the lives of others through community service. The Toledo Woman’s Club is part of this organization and is a sponsor of the music campships. Last year one of the recipients was from STC, and another was an alternate in case someone else could not attend.
