Veterans Day observances planned in Toledo, Tama

Veterans Day observances get under way with a breakfast for veterans served at South Tama High School at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 9 (RSVP Required- call 484-4345) followed by the Veterans Day program at 9:30 a.m. in the high school gym by the Toledo American Legion Post 72 and Sons of the American Legion.

On Friday evening, Nov. 9, the Tama American Legion and Auxiliary will host their monthly fish fry and bake sale from 5-7:30 p.m. with recycled fall and winter flowers for sale. The proceeds from the flower sale pay for veterans grave markers.

On Saturday evening the Toledo Legion will serve their annual turkey dinner from 4:30- 7 p.m. at the Legion Hall, 109 N. Main.

The Toledo American Legion and Sons of the American Legion will have a ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Bandstand on the Tama County Courthouse Square. If there is inclement weather the program will be at the Legion Hall.

Bells to Ring

Kennan Seda, Tama Sons of the Tama American Legion, reports “One project that the American Legion is promoting nationally and the Tama Legion Family is supporting locally is the Bells for Peace project where church bells in each community are to be rung at 11 a.m. on November 11.

“One group of volunteers is including the church bell at Holy Trinity Cemetery northeast of Toledo on Dupanda Road. After the bell ringing, participants will visit the graves of veterans who died in the service of our country including World War I veterans: Sergeant Joseph A. Hora, Corporal George John Rebik and John H. Breja. The graves of all other veterans who died in the service of our country will be included like Vietnam Veteran Captain Norbert A. Podhajsky.”

Movie at Wieting

A screening of the movie “Sergeant York” will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11, at the Wieting Theatre, 101 S. Church, Toledo. The Tama County American Legion and County Legion Auxiliary are sponsoring the showing.

Veterans Day- End of WWI 100th Anniv.

An open house in observance of Veterans Day and the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I will he held at the Tama County Historical Society Museum, 200 N. Broadway, Toledo, on Sunday, Nov. 11.

Elizabeth Reece, Historical Society president, said the event is planned from 4-6 p.m. and everyone is invited to attend. Refreshments will be served. MORE?DETAILS:?PAGE 7.
