Tyynismaa, Dvorak to again head South Tama School Board

South Tama School Board Director District 3 Penny Tyynismaa, Tama, was chosen by fellow board members as board president for a second year during the annual meeting Monday night, Sept. 24, at the Partnership Center in Tama. District 5 Director Jackie Dvorak, Chelsea, was reelected vice president.

Both were chosen on voice votes and each abstained in the election for their respective office. Board members Ron Houghton and Mandy Lekin, both of Toledo, and Alan Kline, rural Toledo were all present Monday.

In business Monday the board:

approved application for $160,329 in modified allowable growth and supplemental aid for special education to help in offsetting a deficit. The South Tama District has experienced a special education fund shortfall of about $500,000. Staff reductions and adjustments have been made to aid in reducing spending in the area while maintaining required and acceptable levels of educational services,

approved volunteer coaching assignments for Riley Rutledge, volleyball and Moises Fonseca, wrestling.

approved early graduation requests for two students.

reappointed Ahlers and Cooney Law Firm, Des Moines, to serve as legal counsel.

reappointed The Tama News-Herald and The Toledo Chronicle as official newspapers.

set the annual meeting to be held at the Sac and Fox Tribal Center for Oct. 22 at 5:30 p.m.
