Presentation on Czech Heritage, Culture in Iowa set for Aug. 1
The Tama County Historical Society will host artist and Czech cultural practitioner Sonya Darrow for a multimedia presentation on Czech-American heritage and traditions on Wednesday, Aug. 1, at 7 p.m. The presentation will take place across the street from the museum in the First Presbyterian Church, 100 W. State St, Toledo.
Artist Sonya Darrow created “Stezky/Pathways,” a socially-engaged project with Iowa Czech settlements that combined art and auto-ethnography (study of self in relation to society). Through the integration of sound, everyday objects, and storytelling, the artist created inter-media art experiences to celebrate the work of rural Czech-American “keepers of tradition.” The artist continued “Stezky/Pathways” back in the Czech Republic to celebrate the Centennial of Czechoslovakia with the support of the U.S. Embassy in Prague.
Darrow will discuss the outcomes of “Stezky/Pathways” in Iowa and in the Czech Republic along with her most recent project, “Protivn/Protivin.” Please join the artist for a sonic and visual journey across Iowa’s cultural landscape – from the Bohemian Alps to the Czech dialect of Protivin, Iowa.
The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served in the museum following the program. For more information on upcoming historical society programming, visit www.tamacountyhistory.org.
