Pastor Brian Oliver aligned Kiwanis’ programs for the month of April. He introduced Bob Kendall, Toledo Chief of Police. Chief Kendall spoke about the organization of the Toledo Police Department. He pointed out that the department has officers who have a particular expertise. For example, Sergeant Dan Quigley is the taser instructor and the hostage negotiator expert, and Officer Nate Shepherd is the fingerprint expert.

Among the duties of the department is traffic enforcement, but by far, most of their efforts are directed toward looking for drugs. They also serve court orders and see that those orders are enforced. In cases involving a mentally ill person, the police will take them for help. They also enforce city ordinances like those requiring lawn maintenance and taking care of stray dogs. However, there are certain things the department will not do like give legal advice.

Pastor Oliver was very surprised when Chief Kendall spoke about the Pastor’s help when he volunteered to be the department’s chaplain. His work as Chaplain was recognized by the department when they gave Pastor Oliver an official police badge denoting him as department Chaplin.

It seems that it is not just parishioners and community members who will miss Brian. As much as all of us hate to see him leave, we all pray for his happiness and success in his move to Muscatine.
