Eight members of Deloris Ryan’s fourth grade class from last year were honored by the South Tama School Board at the Nov. 7 South Tama School Board meeting. These students had their poems published in A Celebration of Poets, Spring 2016 edition.
The students wrote poems during a unit in social studies. The students studied the regions of the United States. When learning about the Southeastern part of the United States, they learned about the Civil Rights Movement.
To fully understand the impact during that time period, the fourth graders used photographs from Remembrance by Tony Morrison. After choosing a picture, the students had to put themselves as one of the people in the photograph.
The poems they wrote included how that person felt, what they could see and hear, and what their dreams and hopes would be.
These students whose poems were selected received the High Merit Award. The students that were chosen for this honor were Alexia Garcia, Logan Kurth, Yoselin Garcia, Zophia Zmolek, Victor Sosa, Maeley Elsbury, Mary Kate Frakes, and Destine Panosh.
This is such an accomplishment for these young, published authors, Ryan said.
