Policies, personnel, approved by South Tama School Board

Several personnel positions were approved and policy actions were taken by the South Tama School Board on Monday night, July 25.

Approved contracts were for Linda Schuler, half-time preschool effective Aug. 15, at a salary of $19,316, Levi Kaufman, assistant Varsity Wrestling coach effective Nov. 1, $2,973; and Troy Wanatee transferred from Elementary Title VII Aide to Middle School Special Education Aide at $11.22 per hour.

One resignation was approved for Bryan Anderson who was 7th Grade Boys Basketball coach, effective immediately.

Volunteer coaches approved were J.J. Novotny for football, Doug Stadler and Stan Upah for volleyball both starting in August, 2016, Larry Fletcher and Jake Jacobson, basketball, Rick Hopper, middle school basketball, Mike Wedmore, basketball and softball, Baron Davis, Todd Hinegardner, Dan Lopez and Travis Smith, wrestling all starting in November; Lynette Benda, tennis and Dave Chizek, soccer, both starting March, 2017; Kelly Smith and Darvin Graham, baseball effective June, 2017.

Student Handbooks

The STC High School Handbook for 2016-17 was reviewed. Each student receives a copy of the handbook when registering. This covers Student Activities, Student rights and Responsibilities, Student Scholastic Achievement, Events Calendar, as well as miscellaneous items with a map of school facility and grounds, telephone usage, visitors and guests, legal status of student, off limit areas, school lunches, and much more. Several changes were approved for the hand book.

Also, the Middle School Student Handbook South Tama Elementary handbook were reviewed. Several changes were made in these, including tardiness and absence rules.

Board Policies

Affirmative Action and Equal Employment Opportunity -Several changes were made on this policy including the definition of harassment, bullying and hazing. Board Policy 402.1 , was changed to 402.1 and Equal Educational Opportunity were discussed and approved with the change as follows.

This states it is the policy of the SLTC Community School District not to discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, religion, creed, age (for employment) marital status (for programs), sexual orientation, gender identity and socioeconomic status (for programs) in its educational programs and its employment practices. There is a grievance procedure for processing complaints of discrimination. The board requires all persons, agencies, vendors, contractors and other persons and organizations doing business with or performing services for the school district to subscribe to all applicable federal and state laws, executive orders, rules and regulations pertaining to contract compliance and equal opportunity.

Board policy 500 was approved with a couple of changes The board supports the delivery of the educational program and services to students free of discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, religion, creed, age (for employment), marital status (for programs) sexual orientation, gender identity, and socialeconomic status (for programs. This previously read basis of race, color, gender, marital status, national origin, religion or disability) The other change was changing the Affirmative Action Coordinator to Equity Coordinator.
