Maj. Steven C. Murty takes command of Division Aviation Battalion

Maj. Steven C. Murty, son of Lawrence and Rebecca Murty, Tama, and a graduate of South Tama High School took over command duties of the USAAD 5th Division Aviation Battalion – Headquarters Joint Readiness Training Center at Ft. Polk, La. on July 8.

Among those attending the Change of Command Ceremony were his father, Lawrence Murty, and Alan and Karen Landuyt, all of Tama.

MAJ Murty is married to Tracy Murty and has two children, Alexis (15) and Natalie (12).

Background:

MAJ Steven C. Murty, was commissioned in the Medical Service Corps in December, 1996.

MILITARY AND CIVILIAN EDUCATION: MAJ Murty earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He is also a graduate of the Army Medical Department (AMEDD) Officer Basic Course and Captain Career Course, San Antonio, TX, and the Initial Entry Rotary Wing Course, Fort Rucker, AL. In addition, he attended the Branch Training for Aeromedical Evacuation Officers, San Antonio, TX, and the Aeromedical Evacuation Officer Pre-Command Course. Fort Rucker, AL.

ASSIGNMENT HIGHLIGHTS: After commissioning, MAJ Murty’s first assignment was as the Medical Platoon Leader for the I It Battalion 67th Armor, Fort Hood, TX in April 1997. In December 1998, he was assigned to HHC, 204th Forward Support Battalion where he served as the Battalion S- I and the Battalion S-4. In January 2000, he moved to Fort Rucker, AL for helicopter flight training. Upon completion of the flight training, MAJ Mur-ty moved to Fort Riley, KS to serve as the Executive Officer, Forward Support MEDEVAC Team Leader, Flight Platoon Leader, Assistai-,’, Flight Operations Officer, and the Rear Detachment Commander for the 82nd Medical Company Air Ambulance. While assigned to the 82nd Medical Company, he deployed to Saudi Arabia in support of Operation Southern Watch and twice to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In July 2006, MAJ Murty moved to Republic of South Korea as an Air Ambulance Platoon Leader for Charlie Company, 3-2d General Support Aviation Battalion (GSAB). In July 2007~ he moved to Fort Rucker, AL where he served in numerous positions for the United States Army Air Ambulance Detachment (USAAAD) and deployed to Afghanistan as the Personnel Recovery Director for Regional Command-South. In June 2013, MAJ Murty moved to Republic of South Korea as the Brigade S-2 for the 65th Medical Brigade. In June 2014, he moved to Fort Rucker, AL where he served as the Chief of Aviation Physiology for the United States Army School of Aviation Medicine (USASAM).
