The GFWC / Iowa Toledo Woman’s Club met at the Toledo Library on Tuesday, Feb. 9, with Floriss Adair and Karen Havran as hostesses. In spite of the inclement weather 14 members were able to attend. Clara Boldt of Toledo was our guest speaker.

Her topic was “Motorcycle Safety” and dealt with safety for the cyclists, with rules for motorists to prevent many of the accidents. Many of these were actual laws that we weren’t aware of. It was a very worthwhile program enjoyed by all.

Election

The meeting was called to order by President Karen Havran.

Shirley Otterman presented the slate of Officers gathered by the nominating committee of herself, Arlene Gerlach and Maxine Boles.

They are Earlene Bacon, President; Donna Lasser, Vice-President; Carolyn Anderson, Secretary; and Marlene Eernisse, Treasurer.

With no nominations from the floor, the Nomination Committee Chairman asked for the slate of officers to be elected. Motion was carried. Installation will be held during the May meeting.

Discussion was held regarding an amendment to the Constitution, by also electing a 2nd Vice-President, whose duties would include mentoring newer members accepting offices, and keeping the necessary records each month for the reporting to State GFWC at the end of the year This will be voted on at our March meeting.

Scholarships

GFWC Scholarship forms in many categories are available at the STC Guidance office and Music and Art Teachers. Music Campships are available for middle and high school students. These must be postmarked no later than March 1st.

Reports

Maxine Boles gave an update on how and where we can donate items to the Domestic Abuse Shelter. Ann McMullin reported on space heaters and the dangers of using many of them. Marlene Eernisse gave Federation news, reporting on American Heart Month.

It is the No.1 killer of women- more than all of the cancers combined. Symptoms are different for women, rarely is chest pain involved. 80 percent of heart disease in women is preventable and more women are beating the disease than ever before.

`Resources listed were Heart Truth Campaign (GFWC Partner), Go Red for Women, American Heart Foundation and Centers for Disease Control.

State Scholarship Judging will be held in Toledo again this year on March 18 and 19. Bingo will be at Premier Estates on Feb. 26.

Meals were delivered by Ann and Jerry Hendricks, Frank and Floriss Adair, Carolyn and Jack Walker, Marlene Eernisse and Larry Skala, and Carolyn Anderson and Earlene Bacon.

Donations were made to several GFWC Partners. Recipients included: Shot @ Life, Operation Smile, St. Jude Research Hospital, Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY), Canine Companions, Prevent Child Abuse America and USO.

Other donations were to GFWC/Iowa Scholarship Fund, Tama County Humane Society and Toledo EMS.
