In 1948, M. G. Mickelson and Jean D. Mickelson moved to Toledo, Iowa. Mike, a graduate of the University of Iowa Law School, started a law practice in Toledo. Jean was from Dysart, Iowa. She graduated from Dysart High School and from Iowa State Teachers College, now the University of Northern Iowa. She was a teacher at one time in the Dysart school system.

Mike died in 1986. In 1993 Jean established the Jean D. Mickelson Charitable Trust with John Kavalier and Jim Roan acting as Trustees.

Jean passed away on May 24, 2015, and had been a resident of Ketchum, Idaho.

Jean is survived by two sons. Dr. Mike Mickelson is a retired orthopaedics doctor and lives in Eagle, Idaho. He graduated from the South Tama County Schools and the University of Iowa Medical School, where he taught at one time.

John Mickelson is also retired and lives in Ketchum, Idaho. John also graduated from the South Tama County Schools.

Jean’s Charitable Remainder Trust is now making the following three gifts as set forth in her Trust:

(1) 33-1/3 percent of the trust to the South Tama County Scholarship Fund, said sum to be used for scholarships for students in need as its governing board shall determine. The amount of this gift is $ 174,707.

(2) 33-1/3 percent to establish the Mickelson Family Fund in Orthopedics as an endowed fund to be used by the Foundation to provide unrestricted support for the needs of the University of Iowa Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation. The amount of this gift is also $174,707.

(3) 33-1/3 percent to establish the Marion and Jean Mickelson Scholarship Fund as an endowed fund to be used by the Foundation to support two or more annual scholarships to deserving students in need in the University of Iowa College of Law. The amount of this gift is also totals $74,707.

Dr. Mike and John are happy to present these gifts for their parents, who so believed in the University of Iowa Medical School and Law School and in the Community School District of South Tama County. They have a strong belief in supporting, as others do, the South Tama County Community where their parents worked and lived and where they attended school.

Les Koch, president of the South Tama Foundation, said, “We appreciate all donations. A large gift like this from the Jean D. Mickelson Trust will go toward expanding the amount of scholarships we are able to give. As college costs increase, we want to increase the level of awards.”

The South Tama Scholarship Foundation, established in 1990, has awarded a total of $927,000 to 1,425 graduating STC?seniors over the ensuing years. This year a total of $70,250 was awarded to 44 senior class members.
