Honor – Celebrate – Imagine at the Wieting

he Wieting Theatre and Opera House has a rich history and at this time, it is important to pause and Honor the Past. In 1912 Ella Wieting had the Opera House built as a memorial to her husband, Philip, and dedicated to their many friends in Tama/Toledo. In 1960, after being closed for almost two years, community-minded volunteers took over the management and operation of the theatre. Rarely do we get a chance to say “Thank you” to all the past trustees, guild members, and volunteers whose work has made our present day accomplishments possible.
Now it is time to Celebrate the Present. The current dedicated trustees, guild members and volunteers are people of varied knowledge and talents working together to continue the legacy of the Wieting. Every facet of our community was involved in Phase I. Local contractors shared their talents; businesses, clubs and school groups helped in the fund raising efforts. Over 500 individuals gave donations in addition to the many state, local and regional grants that helped make this project a reality. Thank you to all who played a part in Phase I. The Wieting Theatre is a place to receive a warm welcome, greet your friends and neighbors and have a quality movie experience.
Since our renovation in 2012, the Wieting has hosted over 50 groups including the Iowa Supreme Court, entertainers from the University of Iowa and the University of Northern Iowa plus school, political and church groups and even a wedding.
Retiring the $1.4 million debt is a call for celebration. Anonymous friends of the theatre agree and are paying for a free movie for the entire community on May 1-3rd at 7 p.m. Home is a delightful movie by Dreamworks Animation and fun for the whole family. The theatre will open at 6 p.m. with door prizes given away beginning at 6:30. Every night some lucky person will win a “Golden Ticket”, a movie pass good for a whole year! If you have never attended a movie since the renovation this is your chance. So come early and join in the fun!
For the past 100 years, the Wieting Theatre and Opera House has been an asset to Tama/Toledo and has added to the quality of life in our community. With that in mind, it is time to Imagine the Future and how the Wieting can continue to serve. The Guild would like to complete the renovation of the building. Phase II would enhance the theatrical part with the installation of 21st Century rigging, lighting and sound as well as remodeling the dressing room in the basement. The Guild welcomes your suggestions. It is your theatre. We are the caretakers for the present.

Right now, let’s focus on the Celebration!! See ya at the Wieting!
