Red Ribbon Week promotes commitment to raise awareness of drug, tobacco usage

South Tama Community School District invites the community to take a visible stand against drugs by celebrating Red Ribbon Week from October 27-31.

Red Ribbon Week raises awareness of drug and tobacco use and the problems related to drugs and tobacco facing our community. The Red Ribbon Campaign encourages parents, educators, business owners, and other community organizations to promote drug/tobacco-free lifestyles.

This year’s celebration will kick off on Monday, Oct. 27, with a “Wear Red Day.” Dress-up days throughout the week at the high school include:

Tuesday, Oct. 28 – Save the Day from Drugs, Alcohol and Tobacco (dress as your favorite superhero)

Wednesday, Oct. 29 – Stay Strong Against Drugs Alcohol and Tobacco (dress in army gear/camo)

Thursday, Oct. 30 – Pair Up Against Drugs, Alcohol and Tobacco (dress up as twins)

Friday, Oct. 31 – Spook out Drugs, Alcohol and Tobacco (dress in your Halloween costumes)

“Red Ribbon Week encourages our entire community to adopt healthy, drug-free lifestyles,” said Kate Ihnen, Red Ribbon Week Co-Coordinator. “The campaign brings together parents, schools, and businesses as we look for innovative ways to keep kids and communities drug and tobacco free.”

The red ribbon symbolizes a continuing commitment to reducing the demand for illicit drugs and tobacco in our communities.

“Red Ribbon Week gives us the opportunity to be vocal and visible in our efforts to achieve a drug/tobacco-free community,” said Kallie McCartney, Red Ribbon Week Co-Coordinator. “Research shows that children are less likely to use alcohol, tobacco and other drugs when parents and other role models are clear and consistent in their opposition to substance use and abuse.”
