The South Tama Horticulture class started seeds of a number of lettuce varieties early this spring.
The seeds were started in a new hydroponic system that will be used to grow more vegetables for the STC cafeteria in the future.
A hydroponic system grows plants using a nutrient solution instead of soil. The lettuce was harvested in late May after a 70 day maturity length. The hydroponic system yielded 75 gallon bags or 25 pounds. This lettuce was all donated to the South Tama County Food Pantry.
