Excitement is building around the new and improved South Tama Lions Club, which officially relaunched with a soup supper held at the Tama American Legion last Thursday evening.

It was a festive and joyous occasion with a raffle drawing and plenty of information shared about the future goals for the group. According to a press release in the News Chronicle, a previous iteration of the Lions Club struggled with low numbers and the challenges of the pandemic before ultimately disbanding four years ago.

Club President Samantha Benda is excited to re-establish the chapter with a renewed sense of purpose and some new members who will bring fresh ideas and perspective to the Lions.

“I am beyond grateful to have the opportunity to help rebuild the Lions Club for our Tama, Toledo and Meskwaki community. Since we are reviving and rebuilding the Lions, we have an opportunity to mold this club into the unique support that our area needs,” she said. “We want to change the fact that many people say there is nothing to do in our town. We have compiled a list of exciting events and encourage you to give us your suggestions. All proceeds go directly back into our community to help local businesses and families.”

Benda added that she wants herself and fellow club members to be “people you can turn to when you are in need” and a support family. She’s a second generation Lion and couldn’t be more proud.

Another leader in the new club, Tama County Investigator Trevor Killian, emphasized the importance of “revitalizing a legacy of community service.”

“Our approach involves conducting a thorough needs assessment, fostering partnerships, and initiating a diverse range of service projects tailored to address local challenges. We emphasize collaboration with businesses, schools, and nonprofits, while also prioritizing youth involvement through educational programs and mentorship opportunities,” Killian said. “Leveraging social media and community events, we aim to amplify our impact and encourage active participation. The relaunch is not just about rejuvenating an organization; it’s about reigniting a spirit of service, creating connections, and making a lasting, positive impact on our communities.”

So while last Thursday’s event may have been the first for the South Tama Lions Club since returning from its hiatus, it certainly won’t be the last. Keep an eye out in the News Chronicle for the latest updates, or follow the group on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/SouthTamaLions

The next meeting is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 18 at the Tama Legion at 4 p.m. All are welcome, and one does not need to be a member to attend. Those who wish to join the club and haven’t done so already should bring $35 for the new member fee.
