Iowa State to offer unique opportunity for cattlewomen

Ames, Iowa – Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will offer a unique educational opportunity for cattlewomen this winter in central Iowa. The program, Boots in the Barn, will be hosted by Story County and Marshall County Extension. The five-part meeting series has been set for 5:30-9:00 pm on Jan. 9, 16, 23, 30, and Feb. 6. The January session will be held at the Gutekunst Public Library in State Center and the final session will be held at the Story County Extension Office in Christy Hall.

Iowa State University Extension beef specialist Chris Clark said the program will include some interactive learning and hands-on activities.

“I hope to use somewhat of a “flipped classroom” where participants receive materials to read and study at home but the actual classroom time will be used for discussion and various interactive learning exercises. In one popular hands-on activity, participants will practice assisting with the birthing process using a life-like model cow.”

Topics will include nutrition, animal selection, managing the birthing process and more. Curriculum is flexible and can be adapted to meet the interests and needs of participants.

“I have some lessons in mind that we will almost certainly use, including some nutrition, pasture management, animal selection, and of course delivering a calf. Beyond that though, we have flexibility to tailor the program to the interests of the participants,” said Clark.

An evening meal will be served at each meeting and preregistration by January 7 is required to assist organizers with meal planning. The program is offered free of charge and includes meals and resource manuals.
