Artist Tim Murphy, a 1970 graduate of South Tama High School, has returned to live in Tama and with him comes his unique work.
Tim has been a Hannibal, Mo., resident for the past 20 years practicing his form of artistry and also worked as a counselor there. He says he has been “chipping flint” for 22 years and “carving” for about 11 years according to his website – Flint Spirit.com
Tim had a large display of his jewelry and art pieces on display at the recent Toledo Stoplight Festival.
He’s the son of Bettie Bernardy of Tama, and the late Dr. George Murphy. His brother, Joe and Tom, also live here.
As he explains on his website, “My goal, here at Flint Spirit, is to offer my art to all of you. It is created by me using the resources my Creator has so freely given. From stone to bone, the voice of God speaks. This is a constant fundamental truth! I’ve always been in awe of nature and the earth we call Mother. I’ve been blessed with the creative ability to take these gifts and create my Flint Spirit art. Now, I’m able to share it with the world!”
Tim has another trip to Italy scheduled for November where he’s been 14 times before where he leads courses at the university of Florence.
