To seek new demolition bids for downtown Tama building
Bids to demolish this building at 230-242 West 3rd in downtown Tama are again to be sought by the City of Tama after a single bid was deemed too high at the Monday meeting of the Tama City Council.
It is back to the bidding process for demolition a piece of downtown Tama property.
Tama Public Works Director John Lloyd told the city council on Monday night, April 17, the lone quote to demolish the building at 230-242 West 3rd Street was much higher than anticipated.
Based upon Lloyd’s recommendation the council took no action.
The city has a Magistrate Court order to raze the building due to its condition. A portion of the roof has collapsed Lloyd said Monday night.
It is owned by Jeffrey and Piene Filloon, Toledo. They retain possession of the property after demolition Tama City Attorney Dan Rathjen has said.
The need for an inspector because of asbestos contamination is believed to have added to demolition cost.
In an amended 2016-17 budget approved Monday night by the council Monday night an allowance for $39,200 was allowed for the work.
If a bid had been accepted the building was to be gone by mid-May.
The building was the location of Pelham’s Garage which included a Nash-Rambler dealership. It later served as a warehouse for the adjacent Harrison Furniture. Candy Harrison Tichy also operated a beauty shop in a portion of the building.
