Keller Berry Farms hosts aronia berry time picking
Move over blueberries, take a seat pomegranates. There is a new super fruit and it is quite literally in town! This new super fruit is the aronia berry, also known as the chokeberry.
Aronia berries, pronounced ah-row-knee-ah, are a super fruit that claims to have more antioxidants than other, more well known fruits such as blueberries, acai berries or pomegranates. The best news is that they can be found fresh right in Toledo, Iowa, at Keller Berry Farms.
Keller Berry Farms, owned by Paul and Esther Keller is located at 3013 U.S. Highway 63, just north of Toledo.
The Kellers will be holding a special event Tuesday through Friday of this week from 2 – 6 p.m. Anyone can come out and pick their own aronia berries. You can also call ahead and place an order for pre-picked aronias. The Kellers’ berries are naturally grown without the use of chemicals. The original shrubs were planted in 2010. The Keller family has also planted and sold strawberries and raspberries just to name a few. They are also working on growing a pear orchard for the future.
Aronia berries look very similar to a blueberry. They grow on a bush and at maturity produce 40 canes or chutes. The canes produce a cluster of berries that have around 12 berries in each cluster. Each bush can then yield 16-25 lbs. The berries are juicy, semi-sweet, and pack a tart aftertaste similar to a cranberry. You can eat them raw, use them in baking, dehydrate them for snack mixes or use them in smoothies.
