Downtown Toledo building razed

It took just over two months to set the procedure, get bids and obtain Iowa Department of Natural Resources go-ahead, but it took only about five hours on Thursday morning, Nov. 6, for the Dostal Construction crew assisted by City of Toledo workers to level the damaged business building at 119 West High St.

Vacant for some time, the Fueled Restaurant and hydroponic growing business located next door had just moved into the building before the Sept. 1 collapse of the northwest side.

Accounts vary somewhat on what happened, but owner Corey Brown told The Chronicle he had been working on his building that night when portions of the second floor front and west walls gave way.

Since then, the Toledo City Council took responsibility because of safety and environmental concerns and authorized Dostal Construction on Oct. 27 to proceed with the demolition.

Due to concerns with the stability of the building at 119 West High, the Priced Right Treasures Store located next door was closed for nearly two months. It had been open only a short time when the neighboring building collapsed.

The building can be remembered as housing Marshalltown Savings and Loan, Carter Jewelry and was reported to have been the home to a car dealership and Western Auto at one time.

It has not yet been announced what future use will be of the property.
