Three days into operating his new A9 Chinese Restaurant in Toledo on Thursday, Sept. 5,, Eddie Su says business response has been almost overwhelming.

He and his wife, Ivy, have taken over the former location of the Peony Chinese Restaurant at 101 Grandview Dr., just off the U.S. Highway 63 – Business Highway 30 junction.

They’re both from southern China and have been in the United States for eight years.

“I like Iowa,” is Eddie’s response to why the couple relocated and opened their new restaurant here.

Eddie says they spent almost two months remodeling the location which features some new seating arrangements and a new counter in the dining area. A9 will seat 70 diners. They also provide carry-out and catering.

They offer “the authentic cuisine of China” with extensive lunch and dinner menus.

For lunch there are 37 selections of beef, pork, chicken, shrimp and vegetables. Lunch entrees include a choice of hot and sour or egg drop soup, egg roll or crab rangoon and fried or steamed rice.

At dinner time, the menu expands to a list of 83 selections. Moo shu, chow mein and lo mein are included along with beef, poultry, pork and vegetarian meals.

There are 17 house specials. Among them are “Rainbow Seafood,” “Mongolian Triple Delight,” “Walnut Shrimp” and “Happy Family.”

There’s nine appetizers and Seafood, Wonton and Wor wonton soups are added to the menu in the evenings.

A “Family Style Dinner” also is available at night which expands the number of selections based upon the number of diners.

Eddie (Chinese name is Zuhua Su, first was in the U.S. in Los angeles. He then came to Orange city, Iowa, and has operated a restaurant at Okoboji for nearly two years.

He credits a friend there for getting him into the restaurant business.

Eddie and ivy have a four-month-old son, Dalan. His parents, Lee and Mom Su are also assisting at A9.
