What to know from Monday’s South Tama County school board meeting
on December 5th, 2022
Elizabeth Dolezal took the Vice President’s Oath of Office for the School Board.
The School Board approved hiring the following: Robert Earles as the middle school custodian, Zim Zapata as a paraeducator and bus monitor, and Marsha Keahna as the Special Olympics Sponsor.
The School Board approved the resignation of Taylor Ray, effective on 12/21/2022.
The School Board approved hiring middle school boys basketball officials: David Nitz, Craig Harrison, Jeremy Weierman, Robert Averill, and Tom Kemper.
The School Board accepted a bid of $6,189.84 from Steve McAdoo to install an air dryer on the boiler in the Middle School. This part will be removed when the Middle School project is complete and installed on the boiler at the Partnership Center.
The School Board approved a Public Hearing for 2022-2023 Calendar changes during the Dec. 19 meeting. These changes will start in the second semester and adjust the time at which students are dismissed on Wednesdays to 1:55 or 2:00 pm instead of the current time of 2:10 or 2:15 pm.
The School Board approved the purchase of a 12-passenger van using ESSER funds. The school will be purchasing a 2018 Ford Transit with 35,000 miles from Cassill Motors in Cedar Rapids for $46,000.
The 2023 STC Music Trip to Los Angeles, California, on June 2-8, 2023, was approved.
The School Board approved the bid for a bond brokerage for the Middle School Project. The bid was awarded to Northland Securities in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with a true interest rate of 3.699%. The purchase price for the bonds is $10,187,157.35. STC will start receiving money from the brokerage by the end of this December.
The Middle School project’s Public Levy Tax was re-confirmed at $2.07.
The School Board approved the sponsorship of a new high school Debate Club. The club’s faculty advisor will be Glory Meyer, and meetings will take place 1-2 days a week without interfering with other school activities. Official scheduling and competition sign-up will begin in January 2023, following a trial run at the end of this year.
The School Board approved the hudI High School Athletics Package for $8,000. This package provides video software for streaming sports and game statistics for basketball, football, soccer, and volleyball.
The School Board approved the purchase of six RealCare electronic babies from Realityworks for $5,914.65 for student parenting education.
The School Board approved ESSER Funding of $12,414.04 to The Strengthening Center, LLC. for student mental health services.
The High School Student Council was approved for hosting a fundraising babysitting event on Dec. 17 from 2 to 8 p.m. at the high school gym. This babysitting service is available for children 5-13 years old with a fee of $20 for the first child and $10 for each additional child. The Student Council will have 50 available slots, and faculty will be present to help monitor, with activities and games for children. The Student Council’s goal is to raise $700.
