The Trojans lost their first game of the season to the perennial powerhouse Pella Christian Eagles at Pella Tuesday, Dec. 2.

It’s a new year for STC basketball and some new faces in the starting lineup. Joining senior returning letter winners Nate Husak, Jeff Husak and Jesse Wedmore were juniors Dustin Dolash and Chalen Shuckahosee who both played in all four quarters of the game.

The Trojans also got relief minutes on the floor from Bo Axler and Brandon Horbach. Blake Nelson, Scott Steuhm, Ryan Clancy and Levi Belton all came in in the fourth quarted for some varsity experience. Sophomore Dugee Tyon is also on the roster, but had to watch from the bench due to an injury.

Jeff Husak tied the game at 2-2 and 4-4, then Nate Husak gave STC a 6-4 lead. The Eagles tied the score, then made a basket, followed by two free throws from Jeff Husak. The Trojans led 10-8 at the end of the quarter.

Axler scored 30 seconds into the second quarter and Dolash added a pair of baskets, along with a basket by Horbach for eight points in the quarter. The Eagles added 15 to their score to make the game Pella Christian 23, STC 18 at the half.

“I was pleased with the effort and determination our kids played with,” said Coach Jeff DeBondt. “We did an excellent job handling their pressure in the first half and controlling tempo.”

Wedmore hit his first basket of the season, immediately at the start of the third quarter, but the Trojans were outscored 19-10 in the quarter as the Eagles built their lead to 42-28.

Jeff Husak added a field goal and Wedmore and Nate Husak each sank a pair of free throws for the STC scoring in the quarter.

The fourth quarter started with an 11-0 run by the Eagles, building their lead to 53-28 and putting the game out of reach by the mid-way point of the quarter. Jeff Husak had two field goals in the quarter. Axler and Belton each added one and Horbach sank a free throw as the game ended with a final score of Pella Christian 59, STC 37.

“In the 2nd half their press bothered us and led to numerous turnovers and easy baskets for Pella Christian,” DeBondt said. “I thought our shot selection was good, but we just were not able to put the ball in the basket. Our kids will bounce back and be ready to go Friday night.”

The Trojans were scheduled to host the Knoxville Panthers on Friday, Dec. 5 and the Sailors from Waterloo Columbus on Saturday, Dec. 6. See this week’s Tama News-Herald for coverage of those games.
