South Tama band director Mike Carnahan is joined by his daughter, Emily, in the Taps Across America observance at 3 p.m. CST, Monday, May 25,from their front porch in Tama. The event was held nation-wide to commemorate Memorial Day as many ceremonies were cancelled this year due to COVID-19 precautions. Neighbors of the Carnahan family expressed their appreciation by standing and applauding from their vantage point across the street. Kalla Hrabak, 6, had the honor of throwing the wreath into the Iowa River at Chelsea in memory of veterans lost at sea during the Chelsea American Legion observance on Memorial Day. She is the daughter of Kyle and Nichole Hrabak.

One of the near 300 flags honoring veterans at Oak Hill Cemetery in Tama is put in place on Friday afternoon, May 22. Traditional Memorial Day ceremonies were curtailed this year by the Tama American Legion and Tama-Toledo VFW in consideration of COVID-19 precautions.
