TOLEDO CHRONICLE – Matthew Evans, son of Michelle and Bert Evans (Manager Fisher training) was recently awarded an Emerson National Scholarship Award.  Emerson awards college scholarships to the children of its employees from across the United States. Grade point average, class rank, and national test scores along with school activities and community involvement are considered in the selection. This year, thirty winners were chosen from a pool of 128 finalists.

Matt is a 2011 graduate of the South Tama County High School.  Besides his outstanding academic performance, he has distinguished himself as a leader (President, National Honor Society and member of student council), public speaker

(Thespian Society, speech), athlete (track, soccer, and academic all-state basketball), and musician (piano, concert and jazz band).

He has also been recognized for logging more than 500 hours as a community service volunteer. Over the last four years, Matt helped organize fund-raisers for the Weiting Community Theatre and the “Nothing But Nets” program, which sends malaria nets to Africa. He has coached elementary-aged children in basketball, helped with the 2008 flood-cleanup in Cedar Rapids, supported political campaigns and local church youth groups, as well as played piano at local nursing homes. Matt has been accepted into the University of Iowa’s honors program, where he plans to major in History and Philosophy, with a minor in Music.
