Girls tennis nabs first win of season

The South Tama County Girls Tennis Team traveled over 112 miles and more than two hours to collect its first win of the 2016 Tennis Season. The Trojans defeated the Maquoketa Cardinals on April 11 by a score of 6-3 in WAMAC Conference Play. STC mastered their opponent, as well as, a persistent wind out of the northwest to find victory.

South Tama built a strong lead by grabbing four of six singles matches in the meet. At #2 Singles, Senior Megan Mann imposed her will against Elly Flenker en route to an 8-2 victory. The win was the first for Mann in the young season. Sophomore Briana Nelson locked into battle at #5 Singles with Shelby Feller. Tied at 4-4, Nelson reeled off four straight games to grab an 8-4 win for the Trojans.

Senior Brooke Keller also recorded her first singles victory of the season when she blitzed Delaney Clark 8-1 at #6 Singles. Junior Brycelyn Haughey posted her first singles win of the season when she outlasted Danya Albert at #4 Singles 8-6. Haughey’s victory allowed South Tama to build a commanding lead in the meet.

STC Senior Natalie Stadler trailed Sandra Maxwell 0-6 at #1 Singles before staging a comeback. Despite collecting four straight games, Stadler came up short in a 4-8 loss. Ryan Roberts moved up to compete at #3 Singles on the night. She led 5-0 against Kenzie Neumann before Neumann fought back. The player from Maquoketa secured eight of the next nine games to win 8-6.

South Tama came out firing in doubles action. The team of Stadler/Mann played aggressive in order to pound Maxwell/Neumann in an 8-3 win for the Trojans at #1 Doubles. Roberts/Keller teamed at #2 Doubles to win the final match of the meet for South Tama. The duo from STC outhit Flenker/Albert by a score of 8-5. At #3 Doubles, Haughey/Nelson fell 4-8 to Feller/Clark.

In JV Play, South Tama came up short against Maquoketa by a score of 4-5. STC posted wins by the doubles teams of Courtney Anderson/Danae Cleppe, Abby Morgan/Abby Buffalo, Kennedy Adams/Ashley Thomazin, and Celia Roberts/Bailey Waldo.
