For the first time in roughly 13 years the South Tama Trojan wrestling team got the chance to compete at a Regional Team dual on Tuesday, February 9. After winning their sectional tournament at BCLUW on Saturday the Trojans (ranked 50th as a team in Class 2A) headed for Mount Vernon where they faced 8th ranked Davenport Assumption.

The Trojans made some strategic adjustments in their lineup and the night began at 182 with STC’s Taylor Boldt and Assumption’s Chris Bridges. Bridges pinned Boldt in the first period (1:06).

Next up for the Trojans was sophomore Dalton Rosenburg. Rosenburg had an action-packed match against Brock Timmons winning by major decision (9-1).

At 220 STC’s Justin Suchanek had some tough competition in fourth ranked Noah Broderson. Broderson got the pin at 1:51.

Assumption grew their lead after Hwt. Travis Bruns got a hard fought decision win over STC’s Kyle Kucera. With the Trojans open at 106 Assumption’s lead stretched to 21-4.

Tenth ranked (The Predicament) Brady Fritz helped to cut into Assumption’s lead with a 7-1 decision win over Jacob Felderman.

The Knights came right back at 120 with Jacob Fenske pinning Rian Simpson.

The Trojans needed some big matches to stay in the running and they got just that with wins from Tanner Probasco, Colton Vest, Jaret Probasco and Isaac Judge and Bailey Chyma.

Out of the seven matches remains the Trojans won five starting with Tanner Probasco at 126. T. Probasco stuck Kole Kreinbring for six points.

At 132 Colton Vest got another pin for the Trojans over John Hua.

Assumption cut into the Trojans’ streak at 138 with Kirk Mommsen pinning Dallas Horne. But then it was right back to the Trojans gaining on the Knights lead. Jaret Probasco got a last second win over 10th ranked Patrick Schwartzhoff. Followed by STC’s Isaac Judge 6-1 decision over Nick Johnson.

Davenport’s Joe Argo sealed the deal for the Knights pinning STC’s Josh Thiessen.

The night closed with a strong win by senior Bailey Chyma over Julien Broderson by fall.

With the points tallied up the Knights won the dual 39-31. While the Trojans road to Team State duals ended, a close loss to a top ranked team is nothing to loose sleep over.

Nine from the Trojans’ varsity roster will compete at the District Tournament on Saturday for a chance to keep their season going. Wrestling begins at noon at Aplington Parkersburg.
