National signing day took place on Wednesday February 3 and the STC Trojans were proud to have five student-athletes from their State Qualifying, Class 2A District 6 Champion team commit to continue their football careers at the collegiate level.

Peyton Rutledge, Justin Suchanek, Jerry Lowe, Kordell Schrock, and Shaquille Carrillo are each looking forward for the opportunity to play for another few years. Rutledge and Suchanek will attend Grand View University in Des Moines. Lowe has plans to play football at the postsecondary level, Schrock is headed to Morningside College in Sioux City, and Carrillo will attend William Penn University in Oskaloosa.

Come May South Tama will graduate one of it’s most successful football senior squads in recent years but the Trojans loss is several colleges’ gain. The five former starters know the hard work and dedication required to be successful on the gridiron.

The weather did not fully cooperate on Wednesday but on Friday February 5 four of the five gathered with family, coaches, and friends to celebrate the moment.

For Schrock there is excitement and anticipation about the possibility of playing a new position next season. The senior defensive tackle looks to move to defensive end once he begins his time with the Mustangs. “It’s more of a one-on-one position with more opportunity to get sacks,” said Schrock. Lowe is looking forward to simply running the ball again.

Rutledge and Suchanek will join former teammate and all-state offensive lineman Ian Slagle (class of 15′) on the Grand View Vikings’ roster next season. Having familiar faces in the locker room will undoubtedly be an asset for the two seniors as they make their adjustments to college life and the game of college football.

For Rutledge getting to play with Slagle again feels “just like family.”
