Variety is everywhere in the new Fleur de lis, just opened in downtown Tama by John and Heidi Purk. Collectibles and antiques from furniture to china and glass, are to be found . The shop is an outgrowth of a booth they operated in the 2nd Hand Store just down the street along with John's life-long passion for collecting.

They are planning an open house this Saturday, Jan. 25, to showcase their new business. Regular hours are 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday at 127 W. 3rd in a building recently remodeled by Marty Hardon. A great feature of the store is the original pressed tin ceiling which is almost perfectly preserved.

The Fleur de lis also features re-purposed items, stoneware, purses, handmade dolls and jewelry. There's musical instruments, a familiar line for John who is a longtime member of the Highway Home Bluegrass Band. He also specializes in old soda bottles and features them.

The Purks' new store got it's name from Heidi, a Louisiana native, thus the "French connection."

The Purks said they plan to accept consignments and will purchase select items brought to the store.

John will operate the store full time while Heidi continues in her position with Central Iowa Residential Services Inc. (CIRSI) working with adults and children with disabilities.

With the new Fleur De Lis there's more in store for downtown Tama:

the coming expansion of Kathy's Barn into bigger quarters on West 3rd Street

the reopening of TJ's Treasures at 5th and State with a noon buffet and collectibles

the continued operation of the 2nd Hand Store on 3rd St., Sweet Repeats and the Tama Pawn Shop, both on State Street

Downtown Tama is becoming a treasure trove for those seeking one-of-a-kind finds or to add to their hobbies and collections.
