Adult literacy classes begin at Tama

September 19, 2013
Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

The Tama Education Center located in the Tama Partnership Center at 215 W. 9th St., is ready to serve adults who are seeking assistance with language learning as well as those preparing for GED testing. Mary McCann Fuchsen will be the instructor teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) class from 9 am to noon, and GED high school equivalency class from 1 pm to 4 pm, Monday through Thursday. The facility officially opened Monday, Sept. 9.

Instructor McCann Fuchsen sees the Tama facility as an important addition to the area because it will bring new opportunities to serve members of the community. "So many area students commute to Marshalltown for ESL and GED classes because they see the benefits. Our classes help individuals gain skills and confidence. This helps develop the adult individual into a marketable employee. It also benefits the whole family. It is important for children to see their parents make education a priority."

New students often feel anxious about beginning classes, but they will be warmly welcomed by Fuchsen and will soon feel right at home in the comfortable classrooms. The cost is just $25 for the initial testing for placement purposes and the first quarter of classes.

"When a new student comes in, they will fill out a registration form and take an assessment test that evaluates their level of English skills. ESL classes help students at any level; we gear the curriculum to meet their needs." says Fuchsen. "We accept any student ranging from one who doesn't speak any English, to the ESL student who wants assistance creating a resume for a job search."

GED preparation classes are offered in the afternoon. Students can earn a high school equivalency diploma by passing the five GED tests in the areas of reading, writing, social studies, science and math. Students who have started working toward their GED are encouraged to complete the testing before requirements change on Jan. 1, 2014. New students pay a $25 registration fee and are given reading and math placement tests. Students are given curriculum according to the results of these tests. The registration fee covers the first quarter of classes as well.
