By Coach Levi Hunerdosse , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

The South Tama County eighth grade football team started the 2013 season with an important win for the players versus Newton.

STC avenged a 2012 loss to the Cardinals with a 20-0 shut out. The Cardinals came out on the opening series and drove the ball the length of the field to the Trojan 5 yard line. The Trojans were aided with a key third down penalty and forced a turnover on downs with a fourth down tackle for loss by Mario Moncada. The teams traded a pair of turnovers and each had one more drive that ended with turn over on downs. The score at halftime was tied at 0-0.

The Trojan kick return team started the second half with a bang when Colton Vest broke an 80-yard kick return for a touchdown that put the Trojans on the scoreboard. The extra point attempt was no good when a Lane Koch pass fell incomplete. The Trojans built on their lead when Vest scored on an 18-yard scramble on a broken pistol play. The point after attempt was no good with the Cardinal defense batting down the pass attempt.

The Trojans defense stymied the Cardinals offense for the rest of the game, forcing multiple 3-and-outs. The defense created two turnovers, a forced fumble by Tanner Probasco and a Preston Chyma interception. STC sealed the victory with a three-yard touchdown plunge by Vest behind the tough offensive line made up of Dalton Rosenberg, Josh Theissen, Gannon Ferneau, Mario Moncada and Shae Betz. The point after try was good when Tanner Probasco hauled in a Lane Koch pass for the extra point conversion. The Trojan held the Cardinals on the next drive to score a 20-0 victory.

"Newton moved the ball very well on us in the opening drive but the D got settled in and bowed our necks and made a huge stop to get the momentum swung in our favor," said Coach Hunerdosse.

Vest led the Trojans' offense with 17 carries for 131 rushing yards. Isaac Judge and Taylor Boldg also added 21 and 12 yards, respectively, on the ground.

Defensively, Moncade led the team with seven tackles. Vest, Koch and Rian Simpson each aded five tackles for the Trojans. Also making tackles in the game were Judge, Probasco, Theissen, Boldt, Ferneau, Nick Ryan, Rosenberg and Christian Novak.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Trojans were led by Damion Chavez 97 yards rushing on only nine carries. The Trojans got on the board first with an 18-yard touchdown run by Chavez. The extra point attempt was good when Nate Lasley completed a play-action pass to Rian Simpson in the corner of endzone for the two-point conversion. STC held the Cardinals scoreless in the first half behind the strong tackling efforts of Chavez, Christian Novak and Josh Konicek. At halftime the Trojans were up 8-0.

In the second half the Newton offense answered with a 20-yard quarterback keeper but the point after try was no good. Going into the final quarter of play the Trojans grasped onto a 8-6 lead. The Trojans then made it a two-score game when Chavez caught an errant toss one handed and proceeded to break multiple tackles for a 25-yard touchdown run. Nate Lasley found fullback Dalton Rosenberg in the flat for the two-point conversion. The Trojan defense held the Cardinals out of the endzone as time expired and the Trojans recorded a 16-6 win.

"Once we got guys lined up right, we played well in the second ballgame.", Coach Hunerdosse said. "Everyone got good playing time and good experience for the future."

Chaved nearly rushed for 100 yards in the game. He carried the ball nine times for 97 yards. Lasley completed both of his passes to Simpson for four yards. Defensively, Chavez also led the way with nine tackles. Novak and Simpson each added eight and six tackles, respectively. Other players recording tackles were Ryan, Rosenberg, Scott Garcia, Lasley, Josh Konicek, Cesar Zamarron, Ryan Putney and Slade St. John.
