Kids “Did, Dig, Dig into Reading” at Toledo Library

September 10, 2013
Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

Dig, Dig, Dig into Reading! That's what these kids did this summer at the Toledo Library reading program. This summer's program focused on gardening, dinosaurs, earthworms and reading!

At the first program, the books Cecil's Garden by Holly Keller and The Diggers by Margaret Wise Brown were read. The kids made pop-up groundhogs out of recycled water bottles and toilet paper tubes. They also made dump trucks out of recycled egg cartons and planted a pea seed in a recycled yogurt cup to take home. Dirt Cups was on the menu and they each took home an Earth day coloring book.

The second program books read were, Saturday Night and the Dinosaur by Karol Shields and Dinosaurs Love Underpants (you can imagine the giggles) by Claire Freedman. These kids made cool fossils out of shells, sand and Plaster of Paris.

Home-made pretzel dinosaur bones were on the menu and each of the kids took home a certificate from our local Subway.

Week three brought a special guest, Kristin Simon from East Central Iowa Council of Governments. Kristin read Earl the Earthworm Digs for His Life by Tim Magner. Kristin brought some of her compost worms to share.

The kids had the option (if they wanted) to dig them out of the compost and hold them. Many of them did, of course. Pretzels and Twizzlers were on the menu and each child took home a pass to the Blank Park Zoo.

On the last week of Dig into Reading, the kids had a blast playing games and eating Popcycles.

But that was not all. There was a final party for all the readers who attended.

Walking tacos and brownies (YUM) were on the menu and each reader received a Dig into Reading sports bag and water bottle to match. Ella Rosario was the overall reading winner with 848 minutes read. It's always fun to see the big groups of kids in the library for our summer program. Thanks for attending and we will see you next year!

The teen program, Beneath the Surface, was more low key where the kids just hung out, ate munches and got crafty (just what teens like to do) and read of course! These kids made some of the cutest painted rocks ever and then displayed them for everyone to see. Perla Nunez was the teen overall reading winner with 1135 minutes read. Nice job to all of our readers!

The library recognizes the State Bank of Toledo for providing our sports bags and water bottles, the Blank Park Zoo for supplying our passes, Subway of Toledo for providing a free Kids Pack, Adventureland for donating two tickets and the Shopko Foundation for helping to supply our treats. Also, Philip Norton, Brintley Elsberry, and Autumn and Aubree McFate are appreciated for being our helpers.

See you all next year and keep reading!
