The South Tama/East Marshall girls soccer team traveled to Monroe to take on Prairie City-Monroe on Monday. ST/EM started the game with Sam Earley in goal; Sadie Kavalier, Hailee Weiss, Grace Kavalier and Ericka Dunning in defense; Araceli Angel, Kylee Hoskins, Mono Nunez and Kristi Lasley in the mid-field; with Dani Stubbs and Carmen Angel up front. ST/EM was trying a different lineup to see if it could change things up.
Junior varsity played first and the game ended with a 1-1 score. Ericka Dunning scored the goal for the ST/EM team. This was followed by the varsity match at 6 p.m. PCM came to play tonight and the ST/EM team was caught flatfooted. PCM used its speed to control the first few minutes of the game and in the 6th minute, off a corner kick, took an early 1-0 lead.
PCM came right back and scored again at the 8-minute mark. ST/EM finally woke up, started to play soccer and push into the PCM end. Over the next 15 minutes, the game was up and down the field. Sam Earley, the ST/EM goalie, made some very good plays in goal during this time, as PCM continued to use its speed up front to tax the ST/EM defense.
In the 22nd minute, PCM was awarded a PK, which it converted for a 3-0 lead. ST/EM kept fighting back. Dani Stubbs had a couple of looks at goal, but her shots were right to the keeper or just wide. Kylee Hoskins also had a good look, but again right to the keeper. PCM broke the game open with counter-attacks and speed. PCM scored in the 32 minute, and then scored almost immediately again, and finished up with a goal right before half for a 6-0 lead.
ST/EM came out in the second half, and started to play better. The Lady Trojans did not let PCM dictate the flow, as PCM did the first half. Araceli Angel had a couple of good looks, but again nothing to show for it. Mona Nunez had a nice shot on goal, but again right to the keeper. PCM scored first in the second half at the 49-minute mark and again at the 52-minute mark. But ST/EM kept fighting.
It would have been really easy to give up, but the team did not. At the 54-minute mark, ST/EM was awarded a free kick from about 30 yards out. Araceli Angel launched a nice shot to the far post that beat the keeper for the Lady Trojans' first goal of the season. The score was 8-1 at that time, but the ST/EM team kept fightin, and kept shooting, but were not awarded with another goal.
Hailee Weiss had a save that was one of the best of the season. The ST/EM goalie came out to challenge for a free ball on a breakaway, and stopped the initial attack, but was out for the goal box area. The ball rebounded and to the foot of a PCM player who took a hard shot on goal. Hailee headed the shot over the top of the goal to prevent the goal. It was a very good play and save. PCM would add one more score at the 62-minute mark, making the final score 9-1.
The ST/EM team played a lot better in the second half and it showed. ST/EM had the most shots in any game this season as well as shots on goal. Getting the first goal of the season helped as well. I know that it seems to be a small thing to a lot of teams, but with this season, little things are important. The team needs to learn to come out with the fire and intensity that they showed in the second half from the opening kickoff. The team has a few days of practice and then the final push. The team has games on Friday, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday (First round of regionals).
South Tama's next game will be Friday when it hosts Marshalltown, with varsity at 4:30 p.m. followed by JV.
