South Tama County Middle School girls' track and field teams recently opened their seasons at home on a cold, blustery day.

Despite the conditions and limited outdoor practices, the Lady Trojans competed well on April 15. The eighth grade squad finished third, scoring 84 points as a team at the STC Invitational.

The STC eighth grade team was the only Lady Trojans squad to bring home a victory at the meet. Sabrina Holtz won the discus with a throw of 77-feet, 10 inches. Holtz is the reigning league champion in the discus.

South Tama's eighth grade squad had other top finishes at the meet. Courtney Anderson finished runner-up in the high jump with a mark of 4-6 and third in the 100-meter dash (14.22 seconds). Jensen Vodochodsky was second in the 800-metr run, running a time of 2:47. Lauren Yuska placed second in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 19.52.

Two relays placed high for the Lady Trojans, too. The sprint medley team of Ariana Davenport, Jordyn Thompson, Shae Slaven and Anderson placed second in a time of 2:13. Meanwhile, the shuttle hurdle relay team of Allison Yuska, Rachel Wise, Thompson and L. Yuska finished third, running the race in 1:22.8.

"I was impressed with the girls, specifically in the area of field events where they were able to manufacturer quite a few points," Eighth grade coach Tiffany Thiessen said. "This was an area that as seventh graders, these girls struggled with but have drastically improved their skills."

On the seventh grade girls side, South Tama had three second-place and four third-place finishes at the meet. The second-place finishes came from Saylor Upah in the shot put (20-11), Abbie Parizek in the discus (56-6) and Kenze Smith in the high jump (4-2).

The South Tama seventh grade girls third-place finishes included Carissa Davenport in the 200-meter hurdles (34.34) and Stephanie Slaven in the long jump (13-7). The Lady Trojans also finished third in the shuttle hurdle relay and sprint medley relay. Running the shuttle hurdle relay were C. Davenport, Smith, Kelsie York-Morris and Bri Jensen. The relay members for the sprint medley were Parizek, Smith, Slaven and York-Morris.

The lone fifth-place finish for the Trojans came from Kaylee Chyma. She finished fifth in the shot put (18-7). The distance medley team of Upah, York-Morris, Jenson and Bri Nelson also finished fifth. Upah, Nelson, Sadie Smith and Grace Jiminez teamed up to place sixth in the 4x400-meter relay.

The middle school girls teams compete at BGM on Friday before hosting the North Iowa Cedar League West Division meet on Tuesday May 7.
